APD | Indonesia stages record-breaking exercise event to welcome Asian Games

JAKARTA, Aug, 5 (APD) – A mass exercise event was staged in Jakarta’s main roads on Sunday, spanning from Asiad stadium compound to the city landmark square of Monas, aimed at welcoming the upcoming Asiad after all preparations in Indonesia have been done.

The event was claimed as record-breaking with 65,000 people taking part in the session, including the president, ministers and senior officials of the government.

Indonesia Youths and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi said the mass exercise using traditional dance from Indonesia’s eastern region of poco-poco has been listed by Guinness World Records, making it a historical moment for the country.

The record-breaking event was also held simultaneously in 48 cities in the country and 9 cities abroad.

 After conducted the exercise, Indonesia President Joko Widodo conveyed that the record-breaking event was meant to show Indonesia’s preparedness to host the 18th Asian Games, giving the spirit for national athletes to vie in the sports event.

“We have succeeded in the preparation. We expect to see more success in organizing the matches as well in the achievements of our athletes,” the president said in Asiad stadium of Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) in Senayan here.

Indonesia has received commendation from Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) signed by OCA head Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah related to its preparation efforts to host the 18th Asian Games.  

In OCA commendation issued mid last month, OCA chief said that Indonesia has done great preparation in such a short period of time as it is ready to welcome Asian guests a month before Asian Games begins.

The 18th Asian Games themed "Energy of Asia" was slated for August 18 to September 2 in Indonesia’s two cities of Jakarta and Palembang with over 11,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions have been registered to take part in the sports event.
