MANILA, Sep. 15(APD) – Philippine government authorities declared Signal No. 4 over Cagayan, northern Isabela, Apayao and Abra as typhoon “Ompong” continued its path towards northern Luzon.
In its advisory issued at 8:00 P.M., PAGASA said Signal No. 3 remains over Batanes, Babuyan Group of Islands, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, Ifugao, Nueva Vizcaya, Quirino and Northern Aurora.
University of Northern Philippines president Dr. Gilbert Arce has opened his educational institution’s facilities to serve as evacuation center for Vigan City residents should they need temporary shelter.
Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation and all its agencies and offices have been on full alert to ensure the safety of passengers as Typhoon “Ompong” hits northern Luzon.
Transport Secretary Arthur Tugade has directed agencies under his department to prepare and issue advisories and that stranded passengers be attended to in bus, ferry and airport terminals.
Tugade visited Tuguegarao, Cagayan earlier as he presided over a coordination meeting. Passenger and cargo vessels were prevented from plying their routes in anticipation of rough seas as airlines have been advised to update passengers of flight delays and cancellations.
Stranded boat passengers at port facilities under the Philippine Ports Authority were transferred to an evacuation center in coordination with Manila City government.
In Tuguegarao, he addressed policemen and elements of the Philippine Coast Guard to attend to the general public’s requirements. With Secretary Tugade were Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III and several other government officials.
