15 killed, 19 injured after vehicle falls into gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir

At least 15 people were killed and 19 others injured on Friday after a mini-bus carrying them skidded off a mountainous road and fell into gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The accident took place near Thakrie in Kishtwar district, about 217 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"We have retrieved 15 bodies from the spot and removed 19 people to the hospital in injured condition," deputy police commissioner Angrez Singh Rana said.

"Teams of police and disaster response force personnel are on spot."

According to police, the mini-bus was carrying local passengers on an intra-district route.

Reports said no sooner the news about accident spread, locals as well as police officials rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

Police officials said the mini-bus was crowded with passengers at the time of mishap.

The cause of accident was not immediately known, officials said.

"A case has been registered in this regard and investigations ordered to ascertain the cause of accident," Rana said.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
